Measuring
Impact
Tracking post-CME medical practice
The true test of the impact of any educational
program is whether the participants change in the way they practice
medicine following the activity. Strategically Speaking measures “knowledge
scores” preintervention, immediately postintervention, and
approximately one month postintervention. These periodic tests
reinforce attainment of “desired knowledge level,” determine
if educational objectives have been met, and gauge potential impact
on outcomes.
The use of case scenarios or vignettes for
measurement of healthcare professional behavior has gained support
for its predictive value. A study by John W. Peabody, MD, PhD,
and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco,
confirms the validity of this approach. (JAMA,
April 5, 2000:1715).
The authors conclude that vignettes “appear to be a valid
and comprehensive method that directly focuses on the process of
care provided in actual clinical practice.” With this in
mind, Strategically Speaking designs programs with an emphasis
on case vignettes, which this study also found to be a preferred
method for adult learning. |
